Commissions

I welcome the opportunity to offer commissioned portraits to those who are interested.  Because the pricing varies according to size and complexity, I do not post my prices online. I am happy to discuss my pricing when you contact me.

At this point, I prefer to do single head shots in either pencil or soft pastels (see gallery for samples). I am willing to discuss other options (such as multiple people in a portrait) and I will make the decision based on each individual request.

I draw the portraits from digital photographs.  This allows me to view the photo up close on my computer, so I can be sure to get the details right. I am a little picky about the photo because I have found that some pictures  just don't work. Low resolution, harsh shadows on the face, blurry focus, and faces that are only a small part of a larger photo are very hard for me to draw from. If you live near me, I would be happy to go through photos with you to help choose which one(s) would be best for a portrait. I may sometimes also ask for more than one photo of the subject to help me study details and shapes of facial features.
If you have an older photograph that is from film, I may be able to scan and use it. It depends again on the quality and size of the photo.
Please be aware that if you want to use a professional photograph, you must also have (or obtain) permission from the photographer before I can use it.

The process to have a portrait done is fairly simple. Please contact me via email and I will get back to you promptly. Some of the things you need to consider are how large you want the portrait to be, if you want it to be done in pastels or pencil, and what kind of background you will want. We can discuss what you would like done, see what photograph(s) I will use, and I can give you a quote. I will ask for 50% of the cost to get started. The rest of the payment will be paid upon completion. Once I receive your deposit and your photograph(s), I will work to get the portrait done in a timely manner. Please be aware that I do have busy children at home, and I have to work around their schedules too. If I feel that it will be a long wait for the portrait, I will let you know ahead of time.

I look forward to working with you to create a portrait that is meaningful to you.
